‘Sukoon’ Project Launched in Belapur Court to Resolve Family Disputes Amicably

In a bid to address the growing number of family disputes, the Belapur Family Court has launched the Sukoon project, aimed at resolving conflicts through counselling before legal proceedings begin. The initiative, implemented by the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was inaugurated by Justice Revati Mohite-Dere of the Bombay High Court.

Under this project, the Sukoon Counselling Centre—a field action initiative of TISS's School of Human Ecology—will provide professional counselling to couples and families facing disputes. Counselors appointed by TISS will work on amicable resolutions, helping couples navigate separation with minimal stress while also addressing broader family issues.

Currently, the center will operate one day a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with plans to extend its working hours in the future. Counselling services will be provided free of cost, ensuring accessibility for all. The information of individuals seeking counselling will be kept strictly confidential.

At present, more than 1,800 family cases are pending in the Belapur Family Court. The Sukoon project will provide counselling to those involved in these cases, in addition to the existing court-appointed marriage counsellors. The initiative will also include workshops to promote mental well-being and stress management among individuals facing family conflicts.

Justice Dr. Rachna Tehra of the Belapur Family Court emphasized that the project is designed to ensure a peaceful future for separated couples, allowing them to move forward without lingering disputes. A panel of experts from social organizations has been formed to guide the counselling sessions.

The Sukoon Counselling Centre is located on the sixth floor of the Belapur Family Court. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Justice Dr. Rachna Tehra, along with other judges and legal professionals.
