On December 26, the Sustainable Phansad project, aimed at conserving the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary near Alibaug, was inaugurated at the 3D Auditorium of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo, Byculla, Mumbai.

An initiative by Green Works Trust (GWT), in collaboration with SBI Foundation, the project takes a comprehensive approach to conservation, focusing on both ecological preservation and community engagement. Activities under the project include the revival of vulture populations, long-term monitoring of birds and reptiles, education for tribal children, nature education in rural schools, waste collection drives, and beekeeping initiatives to support tribal livelihoods.

The launch coincided with the eighth anniversary of GWT, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward a greener future. The event was graced by dignitaries such as Sanjay Prakash, Managing Director and Chief Executive of SBI Foundation, and Mrugank Paranjpe, Independent Director at SBI. Guests and partners symbolically inaugurated the event by watering a sapling, which has been planted at GWT’s field station near Phansad.

Krupa Patil, Co-founder and Trustee of GWT, introduced the programme, while Dr. Nikhil Bhopale, Founder and Managing Trustee, delivered a detailed presentation on the project's objectives, challenges, achievements, and future vision.

A highlight of the event was an engaging skit by Seetai Creations, directed by Makarand Sawant, that illustrated the crucial role vultures play in ecosystems and the project's contributions to their conservation. This creative performance served as an effective outreach tool, blending education with entertainment.

Tribal children from the Phansad area presented dignitaries with hand-painted canvases depicting vibrant trees, symbolizing their bond with nature. These artworks bridged the connection between the project's beneficiaries and funding partners, showcasing the community's integral role in conservation efforts.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Milind Pandit, Co-founder and Trustee of GWT, and a special rendition of the National Anthem, passionately narrating the story of Sustainable Phansad through music.
