top-news

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organised TATA Women's Premier League (WPL) (Twenty20 cricket franchise league in India), maiden edition champions Mumbai Indians have retained the majority of their players who were also part of the previous season as per the player retention list  whose period officially concluded on Thursday, 7 November, 2024.

The team management however decided to release England young pacer Issy Wong from their squad ahead of the WPL 2025 auction which is slated to take place next month.

As may be recalled Wong, 22, who recorded the first-ever hat-trick in MI’s WPL winning campaign in 2023, however found herself-sidelined due to the acquisition of South African left arm pacer Shabnim Ismail. Since then she played just two matches for Harmanpreet Kaur’s MI side in 2024, and took three wickets at an economy of 8.33. Three other Indians Humariraa Kaazi, Fatima Jaffer and Priyanka Bala too were released from the MI squad.

On the other hand keeping up with the spirit of continuity, MI have retained their core group including Indian skipper and top order batter Harmanpreet along with Amelia Kerr New Zealand star all-rounder who played a key role in her team winning the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, West Indies top order batter Hayley Matthews, England all-rounder Natalie Sciver-Brunt, India’s attacking wicket keeper batter Yastika Bhatia to name a few.

Based on WPL Governing Council decision to increase the purse for each of the five participating franchises from Rs. 13.5 Crore last season to Rs.15 Crore this time around, Mumbai Indians are left with Rs. 2.65 Crores to bid for the remaining four players in order to complete the 18-member squad for the WPL 2025 season..

Other notable releases of notable players that were released by their respective WPL franchises include veteran Indian left arm spinner Sneh Rana, New Zealand pacer Lea Tahuhu and Scotland medium fast bowler Kathryn Bryce (All Gujarat Giants), India’s leg spinner Poonam Yadav (Delhi Capitals), England’s middle order batter Heather Knight (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
