The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is all set to launch a Rabies-Free Thane campaign in collaboration with Mission Rabies India to combat rabies and reduce the risk of human deaths from the virus. The vaccination campaign will target the vaccination of 10,000 stray dogs in the TMC area from January 29 to February 4.

This initiative aims to break the cycle of rabies transmission and prevent rabies-related deaths. Last year, TMC successfully vaccinated over 7,000 stray dogs.

The campaign will be supported by various organizations, including Thane CPCA, the Indian Society for Veterinary Animal Protection, Citizens for Animal Protection, VTEAMS, and PAW Asia.

A total of 25 teams, comprising one veterinarian and three staff members each, will carry out the vaccinations. Based on data from citizens and animal welfare groups, high-risk areas for stray dog bites have been identified for focused vaccination efforts.

Veterinary Medical Officer Dr. Kshama Shirodkar confirmed that the initiative is part of the state government’s effort to reduce rabies-related fatalities to zero by 2030.
