Thane: A portion of a window frame on the fourth floor of a vacant building in Thane partially collapsed on April 6, leaving an iron grill hanging precariously and prompting authorities to temporarily evacuate two nearby houses as a safety precaution.

The incident occurred at around 10:34 pm at the five-storey Om Sagar Apartment located in the Kharkar Ali area. No injuries or casualties were reported.

The structure, built 38 years ago, had been declared a C1-category building classified as highly dangerous and was vacated three years ago due to structural safety concerns.

According to civic officials, a section of the window on the fourth floor came loose, causing the attached iron grill to break away and hang dangerously, posing a threat to adjacent homes and residents.

After being alerted by a local resident, officials from the Naupada-Kopri civic ward, along with personnel from the disaster management cell and the fire brigade, quickly responded to the scene to assess the situation. In the interest of public safety, two single-storey houses situated next to the building were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

Due to poor visibility at night, the removal of the hanging grill was postponed and scheduled for the morning of April 7.
