As Diwali approaches, the vibrant glow of specially handcrafted diyas awaits buyers, bringing a unique charm to homes while supporting a noble cause. These diyas are crafted by the talented students of Asmita Special School, who are specially-abled and have been trained to create beautiful, designer lamps over the years.
The tradition of teaching these skills has been upheld by local special schools, where educators guide students in crafting various artisanal items, including diyas. This year, as part of their vocational training, students at Asmita Special School have taken on the task of painting diyas, an activity that not only enhances their fine motor skills but also fosters creativity, focus, and hand-eye coordination.
Under the guidance of their educators, the students have produced around 2,500 beautifully hand-painted diyas, which are now available for sale through various platforms and exhibitions. Principal Manda Karande emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our goal is to empower our students by focusing on their abilities rather than their disabilities, helping them build confidence and find their place in the world.”
Karande invites the community to support this initiative, encouraging citizens to purchase a pair of diyas for just Rs. 30. “By doing so, you are not only bringing home a piece of art but also contributing to the growth and independence of our students,” she adds.
