Thousand women ragpickers receive free health and eye check-ups during medical camp

Navi Mumbai: In a significant initiative, approximately 1,000 women ragpickers received free health and eye check-ups on Saturday, organized by the Charity Commissionerate Thane, Government of Maharashtra. The one-day health camp was held at the Koparkhairane centre of Stree Mukti Sanghatana, in collaboration with various organizations including the All India Chemists and Druggists Wholesalers Association Navi Mumbai, Mahavir International, and Lions Hospital Koparkhairne.

The health camp provided essential services such as ECG tests and health guidance, while Mahavir International facilitated eye examinations. As part of a two-month program, the Chemists Association provided health screenings specifically for the women waste pickers.

Present at the event were Rupali Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Charity; Dr. Padmakar Dhondge, Assistant Charity Commissioner; and Pravin Malshikare, Inspector. Key members of the Chemists Association, including Secretary Sunil Chhajed and Vice President Rajendra Jadhav, were also in attendance.

During the camp, the organizers distributed 1,000 pairs of hand gloves and 2,000 free calcium and vitamin supplements to the participants. Additionally, Balwant Chordia from Mahavir International announced that all 1,000 women would be eligible for free cataract surgery and glasses. The Lions Hospital team, led by Dr. Sarika Gupta and Kalpana Prakash, offered complimentary health assessments.

In her address, Rupali Patil expressed her gratitude for the turnout and commended Stree Mukti Sanghatana for their support of the women. Dr. Padmakar Dhondge provided information about various government schemes aimed at supporting these women, ensuring their access to necessary resources.

Vrushali Magdum, Trustee of Stree Mukti Sanghatana, highlighted the importance of addressing the health and educational needs of the ragpickers and their children. Throughout the day, various health concerns were documented, and appropriate treatment plans were discussed.

The successful camp concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Rukmini Paul and Seema Kisve, reinforcing the commitment of all participating organizations to support the well-being and empowerment of these women.
