The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has been awarded a prize of Rs. 6 crore for securing third place in the prestigious Majhi Vasundhara 4.0 campaign, which is organized annually by the Environment and Climate Change Department of the Maharashtra state government. The award was announced for the Amrut group category, which includes cities with a population of more than 10 lakhs.

The TMC's efforts in environmental conservation, executed under the campaign guidelines from April 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024, were recognized by the state government. Commissioner Saurabh Rao expressed his pride in the achievement and thanked the municipal administration for their hard work and commitment to sustainability.

The Majhi Vasundhara 4.0 campaign focuses on a variety of initiatives aimed at environmental conservation, waste management, and promoting green spaces. As part of these efforts, TMC planted over 1.28 lakh trees of Indian species across 62 hectares and along 883 meters of roads. The municipality also created 83 new green areas, which are being maintained in partnership with local organizations.

The municipal corporation has implemented several significant waste management projects, including 10 dry waste management units and 8 compost production initiatives. TMC has also focused on large-scale collection and recycling of bio-medical waste and construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Furthermore, the municipal corporation continues to promote its plastic ban campaign and has made strides in the electric vehicle sector, purchasing 123 e-buses and establishing EV charging stations.

To combat air pollution, air quality measurement systems are being set up in various locations, with actions taken based on the data collected. Additionally, TMC has introduced rainwater harvesting systems in buildings and large complexes, leading to significant water conservation efforts. The municipality is also promoting energy-saving initiatives through the installation of LED lights and raising awareness about electricity conservation in schools and housing societies.

Commissioner Rao praised the active participation of Thane's residents, along with the work of the Chief Environmental Officer, Manisha Pradhan, and other officers and staff involved in the campaign.
