The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has filed a police complaint against 81 unauthorized schools operating within its jurisdiction, where 19,708 students are currently enrolled. Of these, FIRs have already been registered against 68 schools, while the process is underway for the remaining 13. To ensure students do not face academic setbacks, the corporation is working to accommodate them in authorized schools.

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao recently reviewed the issue and found that several of these schools operate without registration, some in unauthorized buildings and others in rented spaces within residential areas. Deputy Commissioner (Education) Sachin Sangle stated that a list of these unauthorized institutions has been published in local newspapers. Additionally, a fine of Rs. 52 crore has been levied on them under the Right to Education Act.

The highest concentration of unauthorized schools is in the Diva Ward Committee area, where authorities have already disconnected water supply to 32 such institutions. Further action is also planned by the Encroachment Department based on reports from the Urban Development Department.

Commissioner Rao has assured support for schools that can be regularized. While five schools have applied to complete necessary documentation, the remaining 76 have yet to submit any proposal. These schools will be given one more opportunity to comply.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to prevent disruption in students’ education. A total of 19 private schools have expressed willingness to absorb students from the affected institutions, ensuring continuity in their learning, informed an official.
