TMC launches helpline for noise pollution and unauthorized pandals

In compliance with the Bombay High Court directive, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has established a grievance redressal system to allow citizens to report violations of noise pollution laws and unauthorized pandal constructions within the municipal area.
The municipal corporation has urged residents to leverage the system to voice their concerns so as to substantially reduce the noise pollution levels within the municipal limits.
However, local residents and environmental experts expressed scepticism alleging TMC was not serious in dealing with the menace. In 2018, the civic body had set up a helpline to control the noise levels during the festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Dahi Handi and Diwali, etc. The 2018 was an attempt to resuscitate a similar attempt by the TMC in 2015.
Local residents and environmental experts alleged that the civic corporation has restricted its interventions to combat the menace of noise pollution to merely creating helplines. A TMC official with the department of public relations dismissed the allegations, and claimed the civic corporation was serious to combat noise pollution.
