Amid reports of a Human Metapneumonia Virus (HMPV) outbreak in China and isolated cases in India, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has assured citizens that there is no cause for alarm. HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes upper respiratory tract infections, resembling seasonal colds and flu. It is most prevalent during winter and early summer.
To address any potential cases, TMC has set up a 15-bed isolation ward at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa.
Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has instructed the Health Department to remain vigilant. The State Public Health Department has analyzed respiratory infection data and confirmed that there has been no increase in such cases in December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
The commissioner further urged residents to stay informed and adhere to the preventive measures outlined below.
