Disconnects 2606 water connections
In a major crackdown on water bill arrears, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has disconnected 2606 water tap connections, seized 411 motor pumps, and sealed 73 pump rooms across the municipal area during December 2024. As part of the ongoing efforts to recover outstanding water bills, notices were also sent to 2330 defaulters. The municipal corporation has successfully recovered Rs. 77.98 crore in water bills from April to December 2024, including Rs. 21.85 crore in December alone under the Dhadak campaign initiated by the Water Supply Department.
The total outstanding water bill amount stands at approximately Rs. 225 crore, with Rs. 76 crore in arrears and Rs. 148 crore pending for the current year. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has issued clear instructions to disconnect water supply and take strict action against defaulters who fail to pay their dues. The recovery campaign aims to ensure timely payment of water bills to maintain the financial health of the corporation and provide uninterrupted water supply to residents.
The Water Supply Department, under the leadership of engineers, has set weekly recovery targets, with ongoing actions including disconnection of tap connections, seizure of motor pumps, and sealing of meter rooms across all wards. Further, any attempts to restore disconnected connections without payment will result in legal action.
A special exemption has been introduced for citizens with domestic water connections. If arrears are cleared in full along with the current year’s water bill, a 100% discount on administrative charges will be provided. This offer is available until March 31, 2025, as part of an initiative to encourage timely bill payments and reduce the outstanding balance.
The corporation has urged all citizens to pay their bills on time to avoid the inconvenience of disconnections. It has also emphasized that action will be taken against municipal staff who neglect their duties in bill collection. The public is encouraged to cooperate and take advantage of the discount scheme.
