The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has recovered Rs148.95 crore in water bill payments for the financial year 2024-25, marking an increase of Rs15 crore compared to the previous year.
A last-minute push by the Water Supply Department on 31 March alone resulted in the collection of Rs7 crore.
As per TMC’s financial resolution, the total targeted recovery from water consumers for 2024-25 was set at Rs225 crore, which included Rs147 crore for current bills and Rs78 crore for arrears. Out of this, Rs94.54 crore was collected for current bills, while Rs40.41 crore was recovered from arrears. Additionally, Rs14 crore was paid directly at the headquarters, bringing the total recovery to Rs148.95 crore.
As per the dues recovery strategy, weekly collection targets were assigned to meter readers in September 2024. Strict measures, including disconnecting illegal water connections, were implemented to ensure compliance. The efforts of meter readers, deputy engineers, assistant commissioners, and zonal deputy commissioners played a crucial role in exceeding last year’s recovery amount by Rs15 crore.
As part of the recovery drive, TMC disconnected 13,156 water connections of defaulters during the year. Additionally, 13,837 notices were issued to consumers with overdue bills. Authorities also seized 2,374 motor pumps and sealed 676 pump rooms to enforce payment compliance.
TMC has announced that outstanding water bill dues will continue to be reviewed, and strict action will be taken against defaulters. Consumers who fail to clear their dues, including current-year bills, will face disconnection of water supply, said Pawar.
