The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced an ambitious plan to convert the Atkoli waste dumping ground into an eco-friendly site, aiming to reduce its environmental impact and enhance the surrounding area.
As part of the initiative a bamboo forest and green islands will be developed. The initiative was reviewed by Saurabh Rao, commissioner, on April 2.
The Atkoli site, located in Bhiwandi and spanning 34 hectares, was previously used for mineral extraction before being designated by the state government for scientific waste disposal. Now, under the direction of TMC, the site is set to undergo a significant transformation.
To support the project, the state government has allocated Rs 50 crore for infrastructure and ecological improvements.
The plan includes constructing a protective wall, a security room, an access road, and levelling 22 acres of land.
A bamboo forest will be planted along the protective wall, serving as a natural barrier while also improving air quality.
“Of the 22 acres, 12 acres will be dedicated to a waste sorting project, while the remaining 10 acres will be used for grass production. To mitigate foul doors, waste disposal will be followed by a layer of soil and the spraying of deodorants and disinfectants”, said Rao.
“Additionally, trees will be planted once a sufficient layer of waste and soil is established, ensuring long-term ecological sustainability”, he added.
