In recent weeks, tomato prices have seen a significant drop, bringing relief to consumers as they are now available at a more affordable price ranging between Rs. 20 to Rs. 40 per kg, down from the previous Rs.180 to Rs.200 per kg. While this price drop is welcomed by shoppers, there is a contrasting scenario in the garlic market. The price of garlic has surged, with retail rates ranging from Rs.150 to Rs.300 per kg. This substantial increase in garlic prices has raised concerns among consumers, as garlic, ginger, and onions are staples in almost every culinary preparation.
Last year, garlic prices dropped due to over production, with rates as low as Rs.20 to Rs.40 per kg. In response to less income due to price fall, many farmers reduced their garlic production. Additionally, unfavourable weather conditions with less rainfall have led to a reduction in the cultivation area for garlic. Consequently, garlic prices now fluctuate between Rs.150 to Rs.300 per kg.
As per the reporters, the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMC) has reported a substantial influx of garlic, with four trucks and four tempos of garlic arriving in the wholesale market. The garlic variety from Ooty is sold at Rs.110 to Rs.210 per kg, G2 garlic is sold between Rs.80 to Rs.160 per kg and Desi Gavran garlic is sold between Rs.60 to Rs.120 per kg, while retail prices range from Rs.150 to Rs.300 per kg.
Garlic is known for its health benefits, making it a sought-after ingredient in culinary. It is rich in sulphur, which is beneficial for skin health and blood thinning. Furthermore, garlic is highly nutritious, yet low in calories. It aids in protecting against common ailments such as colds and fevers and contributes to maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. The sudden surge in garlic prices may be a concern for consumers, but the numerous health benefits it offers continue to make it an essential kitchen staple.
