Retail crosses Rs. 100 mark

Navi Mumbai: After a brief respite, tomato prices have surged again in the wholesale markets, reaching Rs. 40-60 per kg, with retail prices soaring to Rs. 80-100 per kg. This increase, seen since Friday, reflects reduced supply from Maharashtra's key tomato-producing regions like Satara, Sangli, and Sangamner, exacerbated by a complete halt in imports from Bangalore. Traders warn of further price hikes if supply shortages persist, echoing concerns from consumers who fear a repeat of last year's steep prices.

Sharmila Patil from Ghansoli stated, "Last year, tomatoes touched nearly Rs. 180 – Rs. 200 per kg; now it's Rs. 80 – Rs. 100. With rising prices of onions, potatoes, and garlic, managing household budgets is becoming increasingly challenging”.
