Top seeds Mahimkar, Mehendale register contrasting wins: Maharashtra State Open Badminton Tournament 2024

Second seed Harshit Mahimkar justified his ranking with a facile win over unseeded Veer Bhadane with a 30-8 score line in just 11 minutes in a Boys’ U-17 Singles round-32 match of the Yonex Sunrise-Maharashtra State Open Badminton Tournament 2024, organized by the Greater Mumbai Badminton Association (GMBA) under the auspices of Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA), and played at the NSCI courts on Friday.

In contrast, top seed Tanay Mehendale faced a stiff challenge from unseeded Arjun Pawar, before carving out a 30-22 win in 17 minutes. Meanwhile, third seed Ishan Wankhede got the better of Meet Udhoji 30-18 in 17 minutes, and fourth seed Nidhish More ground out a hard-fought win against Soham Tambe by a 30-24 margin in 22 minutes.

In Women’s Singles competition, third seed Manasvi Vaidya overcame Puja Puppala romping to an easy 30-14 win in just 10 minutes, while Apurva Ghadge scored a fighting win against Kaavya Thanukrishnan posting a 30-27 win in 18 minutes.

Earlier on the opening day top seeds Tanay Mehendale and second seed Shvetank Karnik registered comfortable wins in their Men’s Singles second-round matches. Talented Mehendale brushed aside Shivam Chaure's challenge, recording a 30-19 win in 21 minutes in the one-game match at the Willingdon Sports Club courts on Thursday. On the side court, Karnik was in a dominant mood and scored an authoritative win against Aritra Sarkar, coasting to a 30-7 victory in 11 minutes to move into the third round.

Teenager Harshit Mahimkar showed great character and defeated Kanishq Gurram 30-23 in 17 minutes to advance to the third round. In exciting and closely contested encounters, Anay Pingulkar scraped past Yash Bhongle posting a 30-28 win in 17 minutes, while Piyush Kamble prevailed over Sumit Made 30-28 scores in 23 minutes.
