Traders continue to occupy marginal space in APMC Turbhe area

top-news

Navi Mumbai: The APMC Turbhe area, one of Asia's largest markets, is facing growing frustration among visitors as footpaths become increasingly obstructed by traders occupying marginal spaces. Many residents are expressing irritation over the lack of space to walk, as vendors continue to display their products, leaving little room for pedestrians.

The encroachment issue is exacerbated by shopkeepers who have taken over communal spaces surrounding the APMC. Originally intended for rain protection, the rain sheds erected by shopkeepers are now being repurposed for storing and selling goods. Over 100 shopkeepers are reportedly benefiting financially from these sheds, with additional vendors utilizing footpath space to sell groceries, stationery, and even renting out areas to farsan sellers.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's encroachment department is reportedly aware of the problem but has yet to take significant action. The unchecked expansion of commercial activities into pedestrian areas has led to increased congestion, especially during peak festive seasons. Pedestrians are often forced to navigate crowded footpaths, spilling onto the road, further complicating the situation.

Residents and visitors alike are calling for more effective measures to address this issue and restore the intended use of footpaths and communal spaces in the APMC Turbhe area.
