Traffic cops step beyond duty

A woman traffic police officer in Kerala is being praised for her swift action that potentially saved a life. When an ICU ambulance carrying a critical patient got stuck on a blocked road, the officer quickly moved a heavy cement slab to clear the way. A bystander joined her, and together they ensured the ambulance could pass without delay. Their swift and selfless act made way for the ambulance to pass, possibly saving a life.

The video of the incident has since gone viral, drawing praise for the officer’s presence of mind and timely action.

This is not an isolated example. Across India, traffic police officers have repeatedly gone beyond their official duties to assist citizens in distress.

In 2024, traffic personnel from Mumbai’s Kurla Division filled potholes on Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg. The road had become hazardous for commuters. With no access to asphalt, three officers arrived with mud and shovels. While two filled the potholes, a third officer managed the traffic. The effort eased traffic flow and prevented possible accidents.

In another instance from 2023, a traffic constable in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, won hearts for helping a mother in need. While on duty near Periyanaickenpalayam, officer Kishore Kumar saw a woman struggling with her baby. He offered her his seat and took the baby in his arms. The constable looked after the infant for nearly 20 minutes, giving the mother a much-needed break to eat her lunch.

These acts, though not part of their standard role, reflect a larger sense of civic responsibility and public service.

From clearing paths for ambulances to lending a helping hand to commuters, traffic police officers often operate as first responders. Their quick thinking and community-first approach continue to earn public respect and underline their vital role on the streets.
