Protests carried out across Navi Mumbai
In a significant demonstration of dissent, truck drivers and owners took to the streets in protest against a newly enacted law by the central government. The contentious law imposes a 10-years prison sentence for individuals failing to assist victims in the aftermath of a road accident.
The protest was staged in various parts of the city. At the Kalamboli Circle area, the truckers, dumpers, and container drivers blocked the roads, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. Disagreeing with the severity of the penalty, truck drivers and owners converged on Kalamboli Circle, expressing their vehement opposition to what they stated the law as an unjust and impractical legal provision.
As the protest unfolded, heavy vehicles passing through the Kalamboli Circle area were brought to a halt, exacerbating the traffic congestion. Law enforcement authorities deployed a substantial police force at the protest site, ensuring order and attempting to prevent any untoward incidents during the demonstration.
Similarly, another protest which was carried out by the truck drivers at Ulwe along the Nation Highway turned violent. The protesters were seen throwing stones and a policeman was brutally attacked.
A large number of drivers at the JNPA port area are fearful of the mentioned law, and most of them have halted their vehicles, demanding the repeal of this law. This led to traffic congestion in the JNPA port area of Navi Mumbai.
Thousands of drivers in the JNPA port area demanded the repeal of this law, fearing its consequences. Many drivers chose to park their vehicles on the roads in the JNPA port area and preferred to stay at home. While this decision was appreciated by some, it created a problem of traffic congestion on the roads.
