In a bid to tackle the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Thane city, the Thane Traffic Department, in collaboration with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), has installed tyre killers on an experimental basis. This initiative aims to curb the illegal practice of driving in the wrong direction, which has been a significant contributor to traffic jams.
The installation of tyre killers comes in response to the severe traffic issues faced by citizens, particularly around Thane Railway Station. Many drivers, including auto rickshaw drivers, have been observed entering lanes designated as one-way only, worsening congestion and increasing the risk of accidents. To address this, one-way lanes have been designated in certain areas, but the lack of traffic police presence has led to continued violations.
The tyre killers have been strategically placed on the lane leading from Thane Railway Station to Mohd. Vidyalaya in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Path area. Authorities believe that these installations will deter drivers from entering the lanes in the opposite direction, thereby improving flow of traffic.
However, the implementation has not been without challenges. The narrowness of the road and the sudden appearance of the tyre killers have caught many drivers off guard, leading to slowdowns and further congestion. Reports have emerged of pedestrians sustaining injuries while navigating the area, as some citizens remain unaware of the new installations.
Local vendors have also expressed concerns, noting that several individuals have suffered leg injuries since the tyre killers were installed. The situation has prompted calls for better signage and awareness campaigns to inform drivers and pedestrians about these changes.
Traffic Sub-Inspector Vinod Kamble has urged citizens to utilise sidewalks whenever possible to ensure their safety while walking in the area. He stressed on the importance of adhering to traffic rules and being mindful of the new measures in place.
“The Thane Traffic Police and Thane Municipal Corporation are closely monitoring the situation to assess their effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety. Further adjustments may be made based on feedback from the community and the observed impact on traffic patterns”, said Mr. Kamble.
