With the 2024 Ulhasnagar Assembly Election approaching, the Election Returning Officer for the 141st constituency, Vijayanand Sharma, held a press conference outlining key measures for this year’s election process. In response to the growing influence of social media in elections, the Election Commission has announced that it will be tightening its grip on online platforms to ensure fair and transparent campaigning.
A special team of experts has been appointed to oversee activities on social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This team will monitor all content related to election campaigns, ensuring that no misleading or false information is spread. Candidates are now required to submit details of every post, advertisement, and campaign activity on social media to the Election Commission. Violations, such as offensive or misleading content, will result in immediate action, with all social media expenses counted towards the candidates' total election expenditure.
Sharma emphasized, “Strict action will be taken against any false or inflammatory information. The Election Commission is committed to conducting transparent and peaceful elections. Candidates must follow the rules, and voters should not fall prey to fake news.”
Key Election Preparations:
Voter Facilities: Ulhasnagar constituency has a total of 2,80,852 registered voters, including special provisions for disabled and senior citizens. On polling day, facilities such as ramps, support staff, and postal ballots for eligible voters will ensure a smooth voting process.
Polling Stations and Security: A total of 260 polling stations have been set up, all equipped with electricity, water, and communication facilities. High security will be maintained to ensure peaceful voting. The Election Commission has also enforced a strict code of conduct, banning any processions, rallies, or speeches on polling day.
Code of Conduct: Strict adherence to the model code of conduct will be ensured, with severe penalties for violations. This includes careful monitoring of election expenses and campaign activities by candidates.
Sharma concluded the press conference by urging voters to stay informed, “We appeal to the voters to cast their vote wisely and responsibly, avoiding any misleading information on social media.”
