Ulhasnagar skywalk in dangerous condition after thieves loot safety railing

top-news

A dangerous situation has arisen at the skywalk connecting Ulhasnagar station to the eastern side, as most of the railings have been stolen by thieves. The stairs have also been torn down, posing significant safety risks. Thousands of citizens, including commuters and pedestrians, use the bridge daily, raising concerns that this could result in accidents, potentially leading to loss of life or injury.

The MMRDA had constructed the skywalk in 2010 at a cost of Rs. 34 crore to provide a safer passage for pedestrians. However, it has faced multiple instances of theft over the years, with scrap metal mafia targeting the structure. Electrical wiring, equipment, and other materials have also been stolen.

Adding to the danger, the skywalk lacks security guards, and the absence of proper lighting at night has made it a hotspot for miscreants engaging in inappropriate activities.

The maintenance contract for the skywalk, which was awarded to a company in 2010, expired in 2015 and was never renewed, resulting in the current state of disrepair.

Incidents of looting and even violent attacks, including a fatal assault on a police constable, have been reported. Moreover, the skywalk has become a venue for drug abuse, with local gangs frequently seen using it for illicit activities.

Social worker Suresh Chauhan has raised an urgent appeal to the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation administration to take immediate action to repair the skywalk, starting with the installation of railings to prevent accidents. He also called on the police to enhance safety measures and ensure stricter surveillance to restore order in the area.
