Ulhasnagar water supply to undergo full audit, vows commissioner

Ulhasnagar: Ulhasnagar Commissioner Manisha Awhale has initiated a comprehensive audit of the city’s water supply system to resolve inconsistencies and ensure equitable distribution. The move aims to address rising complaints of water shortages, especially from women, and to fulfil the administration’s goal of delivering water to every household.

Although Ulhasnagar needs only 100 million litres of water daily, it receives nearly 140 million litres from MIDC via two treatment plants, Shahad and Jambhul. The water is stored in tanks at Tanaji Nagar, Ramabai, Akash Colony, and other locations before being distributed across the city.

Despite this, citizens from nearly every ward have reported shortages, prompting political protests, including hunger strikes by corporators. In response, Awhale, along with Deputy Commissioner Anant Jawadwar and senior engineers, conducted a field inspection.

She directed the water department to fix leaks, maintain infrastructure, and take action against unauthorized tap connections. The civic body will also install water meters and remove multiple illegal pipelines from individual homes.

“We’re auditing the system to correct imbalances and ensure accountability. Supplying clean water to every household, especially the last one, is our responsibility, and we are acting on it,” said Awhale.
