Piyush Kamble, Ajay Meena lead the way in Men’s Singles category

On a day of upsets in the ongoing CCI - GMBA Yonex Sunrise District Badminton Championship 2024, upcoming unseeded shuttlers Piyush Kamble and Ajay Meena continued with his impressive run of forms and scored stunning wins over the top two in the Men’s Singles Quarter-final matches, that was played at the at the CCI Badminton courts, Mumbai.

South paw Piyush showcased his ‘A’ game and overcame the challenge of top-seed and former champion Nigel D’Sa in a tense but exciting match that lasted close to 40 minutes with a score line of 21-14, 21-18 to book a place in the semi-finals.  He will next take on another talented teenager Harshit Mahimkar, who easily defeated Daras Nadar 21-10, 21-8, for a place in the final.

On the other hand Ajay high on confidence showed good court moment against second seeded Aaryavardhan Jadhav before registering a victory in two straight games 21-12, 21-31 in another Men’s singles Quarter-final tie. He will face next face Ruturaj Rathod who got the better of Kshitij Shinde also won in two straight game 21-5, 21-11.

Meanwhile, rising star Akshat Raisurana showed great grit and determination against second seeded Sahil Gurbuxani before prevailing in two straight sets with an identical margin 21-16, 21-16 to advance into the final of the Boys U-19 Singles category. Akshat will log head with top seeded Harshit Mahimkar who brushed aside the challenge of unseeded Anay Pingulkar 21-13, 21-11 in the other semis.

Upcoming talent and unseeded Risha Parab also scored an upset win defeating second seed Anvi Kakade in three games at 21-15, 14-21, 21-9 to progress to the Girls’ Under-15 Singles final. In the summit clash, Risha will meet the number one seed Thea Sheth who defeated Ananya Katdare 21-16, 21-8. 

In the Boys U-11 Semi-finals tie unseeded Vivaan Waingankar rocked second seed Vir Butani 21-6, 21-12 to set up a summit clash with top seeded Aadiraj Shetty who cruised past unseeded Kabir Raheja 21-4, 21-5.
