Vashi: Vashi’s iconic Sarvajanik Ganesha idol, known as 'Vashi Cha Raja,' is celebrating its 51st anniversary this year. The second oldest Ganesh idol in Navi Mumbai was first installed by the Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav Mandal in 1974 and continues to be a beacon of devotion for the local community. This year's celebrations are being held in a specially created temporary abode behind the Lokmanya Tilak Vyapari Market in Sector 1, Vashi.

The 10-foot-tall idol of Lord Ganesha, sculpted by renowned artist Siddhesh Dighole from Parel and designed based on a sketch by Vikrant Salaskar, is set against an eco-friendly backdrop inspired by the revered Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. The mandal, under the leadership of President Anand Choughule, Vice President Alex Lawrence, Secretary Chandar Malhotra, Treasurer Mangesh Salve, and a team of dedicated volunteers, has ensured that the celebrations adhere to tradition and religious fervour.

Throughout the ten-day festival, various socio-cultural activities are being organized, including sporting and performing arts events for children of all age groups. Health check-up camps, including special sessions for senior citizens, have been arranged to benefit the local community. A Satyanarayan Pooja and a Haldi Kumkum event attracted significant participation from women in and around Sector 1. Additionally, a felicitation ceremony for students who scored 60% and above in SSC, HSC, and graduate-level exams was held, along with a prize distribution function.

The grand send-off for 'Vashi Cha Raja' is scheduled for Anant Chaturthi on Tuesday, 17th September 2024, in the evening. The farewell will feature synchronized beats of the traditional Nashik Dhol and Tasha, flag-bearer performances, and melodious devotional songs, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the devotees to bid adieu to their beloved deity.
