Veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar passes away at 87 in Mumbai; PM Narendra Modi mourns demise

Born on July 24, 1937 as Harikrishna Giri Goswami, Manoj Kumar became a notable figure in Hindi cinema for his portrayal of patriotic characters.
The nationalist characters and the themes he represented on screen earned him the moniker of ‘Bharat Kumar.’
The veteran actor was 87 and died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
According to the medical bulletin, the veteran actor succumbed to cardiogenic shock caused by acute myocardial infarction, a severe heart attack.
He had been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which further deteriorated his health, news agency ANI reported.
Kumar was admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on February 21 after his condition worsened.
Manoj Kumar gained widespread recognition for his films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974).
He also starred in several acclaimed movies such as Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti.
Manoj Kumar was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 and the Padma Shri in 1992 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
The death of the veteran actor was mourned by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Offering condolences and respect, Modi took to X (Twitter):
“Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
