WhatsApp is rolling out a new translation feature for Android users, making it easier to communicate across language barriers. Available in the latest beta update (version 2.25.12.25), this tool allows users to translate messages directly within the app, without relying on external translation apps.
The feature works by downloading language packs for supported languages like Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese, enabling translations even when offline. WhatsApp processes translations locally on the user's device, ensuring that messages remain private and end-to-end encryption is maintained.
Users can manage translation settings within the chat info screen. Options include automatically translating all messages in a conversation or manually selecting specific messages for translation. A useful feature for group chats with multiple languages is automatic language detection, streamlining communication in diverse groups.
While WhatsApp’s on-device translation technology may not always be as precise as cloud-based services, it is designed to be helpful. Users can provide optional feedback on translations, which may help improve accuracy over time. Importantly, feedback does not involve sharing message content with Meta or any third party, protecting user privacy.
The feature works not only in private chats but also in group chats and public channels, making it easier for users to connect in multilingual communities. Currently available to a limited group of beta testers, the feature is expected to roll out more widely in the coming weeks, with more languages set to be added.
