Unruly passenger tied to seat with duct tape, arrested after flight diversion

An American Airlines flight got an unexpected DIY safety upgrade when an allegedly unruly passenger was restrained with duct tape and zip ties after reportedly becoming aggressive mid-air. Arthur Lundeen, 67, was arrested after Flight AA 618, travelling from Dallas to Newark, was diverted to Baltimore-Washington International Airport on Thursday night (September 3). Passengers Juan Mejia, a former law enforcement officer, and Richard Olenick said Lundeen had allegedly been shouting racial slurs, using vulgar language and making offensive remarks before becoming physical. The pair intervened and restrained him until police boarded the aircraft. Authorities charged Lundeen with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault over incidents at the airport. The FBI is investigating what happened aboard the flight. American Airlines said it has “zero tolerance” for violence and prioritises passenger and crew safety. The flight eventually continued to Newark, minus one passenger, but with plenty of turbulence of the human kind.
