Nerul: A cancer screening camp organised by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on October 9 under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan received an encouraging response, with 1,609 women aged 30 and above undergoing preliminary examinations.

The camp was conducted by the civic health department under the National Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Control Programme at the Kukashet Urban Primary Health Centre. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and Health Committee Chairman Dr Jayaji Nath visited the centre to review the arrangements and interact with residents.

The screenings covered oral, breast and cervical cancer to facilitate early detection and timely treatment. During oral cancer screening, 12 suspected cases were identified, while seven suspected cases emerged during breast cancer examinations. Twenty women were referred for further diagnosis following cervical cancer screening.

All suspected patients were referred to the oncology outpatient department at the Nerul Public Hospital for detailed investigations and further medical evaluation.

The initiative aimed to improve awareness about cancer prevention and the importance of early diagnosis. Medical teams also provided counselling, including guidance on avoiding addictive substances.

The civic administration urged women to seek regular health check-ups at nearby urban health centres and report unusual bodily changes without hesitation. Mayor Patil and NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde stressed that early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and called for greater public participation in preventive healthcare programmes.
