Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a stop-work notice to a redevelopment site in Lokhandwala, Andheri West, and fined developer DGS Land Developers Rs 35,000 for alleged violations of air pollution control guidelines.
The action followed complaints from residents about severe dust pollution and falling debris posing risks to pedestrians and motorists. The notice was issued on October 19 by the civic body’s K West ward office.
The Andheri Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens’ Association (LOCA) had shared a video showing clouds of dust spreading from the demolition site into surrounding neighbourhoods. The association also lodged complaints with the BMC and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, seeking urgent intervention.
LOCA representative Dhaval Shah highlighted concerns over inadequate dust-control measures and potential health risks, particularly for children, senior citizens and people with respiratory conditions.
According to the BMC’s notice, violations included uncovered construction materials and debris, loose soil dumped on roads and footpaths, uncovered cutting, drilling and grinding activities, and the absence of a vehicle tyre-washing facility.
The notice was issued under Section 354A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. The developer was directed to stop work immediately and warned of further legal action for non-compliance. The BMC has also instructed Oshiwara police to monitor the site and ensure adherence to its directions.
