Navi Mumbai: In a crackdown on noise pollution, the city traffic police crushed 93 modified motorcycle silencers seized during enforcement drives by the Seawoods and Vashi traffic units on October 14. Police destroyed the confiscated silencers with a road roller near the T.S. Chanakya signal on Palm Beach Road.

The action targets motorcycles fitted with modified silencers that produce excessively loud noise. Residents along Palm Beach Road, from NRI Junction to Balsheth Chowk, and in Sectors 42, 46 and 50 have repeatedly complained about the disturbance, particularly during early mornings and late nights.

The noise has raised concerns about its impact on senior citizens, children, patients, and residents living near hospitals, schools, and residential complexes.

Following these complaints, the Seawoods and Vashi traffic units intensified enforcement drives from January 2026. Action has been taken under Section 198 of the Motor Vehicles Act against vehicles violating applicable rules, and the illegal silencers have been seized. Wednesday’s operation saw 93 confiscated silencers destroyed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Rahul Khade, along with senior police officers and a representative of the Vashi Regional Transport Office, was present during the operation.

Garages warned against installing illegal silencers

DCP Dr Rahul Khade said, “The campaign against modified silencers would continue. Royal Enfield Bullet riders are appealed to voluntarily remove illegally modified silencers and restore their vehicles to compliant specifications.”

Khade also warned that garages installing such silencers would face strict action. The traffic police said enforcement would continue to curb noise pollution and provide relief to residents affected by excessively loud motorcycles.
