New Delhi: India midfielder Manpreet Singh has said he is approaching his fourth FIH Hockey World Cup with the mindset that it could be his last, as the team aims to end a 51-year wait for a second men’s world title.
India’s only World Cup triumph came in 1975. Manpreet, 34, said the current squad has the belief and experience to finally add another crown, having already secured back-to-back Olympic medals.
“We have won back-to-back Olympic medals, but a World Cup medal is still missing. For me, this could be my last World Cup, so I am determined to achieve what we haven't yet,” Manpreet said.
He credited India’s Olympic success with lifting confidence within the squad, adding that senior players including captain Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh have shared their experience with younger teammates.
Manpreet stressed that India would not be swayed by opponents' reputations, including that of Pakistan, insisting the team would stick to its own game plan and treat every match with respect.
He also praised Harmanpreet Singh's leadership and drag-flicking, calling him an “exceptional captain.”
“I am confident that we will reach the final of the World Cup. The energy in the camp is high, and every member of the squad is determined to achieve something special,” Manpreet said.
India begin their World Cup campaign against Wales on August 15.
