India is among seven countries invited to present their projects for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on October 6.
Germany, Hungary, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye are the other countries currently engaged in continuous dialogue with the IOC over hosting the Games. Their projects will be presented to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November, although the organisation has not announced the exact dates.
The IOC said no new interested parties would be considered for the 2036 Olympics after October 31. It added that several National Olympic Committees were holding non-committal discussions about hosting Games beyond 2036.
Bids will be assessed on technical and operational considerations, including venue master plans, athlete experience, funding strategies, political and public support, Games-delivery capabilities and long-term benefits for host communities.
India submitted its Expression of Interest in 2024, naming Ahmedabad as its preferred host city. The country has never hosted the Olympic Games. If selected, negotiations will be led by the Indian Olympic Association in collaboration with the Gujarat government and with support from the Union Sports Ministry.
The selection process was halted after Kirsty Coventry became IOC president. She said fresh feedback would be sought from member nations to streamline the procedure. The host is expected to be chosen in mid-2029.
Coventry said each Olympic host brought its own character through its people, culture and approach to staging the Games. However, she stressed that athletes must remain central to every future bid, arguing that their experience should be the starting point for planning the event.
