Ambernath: State Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Animal Husbandry Pankaja Munde has directed the Thane District Superintendent of Police to take immediate legal action in connection with the death of a kitten after it was allegedly thrown from the 12th floor of Royal Flora Housing Complex in Palegaon, Ambernath East.

The incident, captured on CCTV, came to light after the video went viral on social media, triggering widespread anger among animal lovers and residents. Activists approached Shivajinagar Police Station, demanding registration of a case and strict action against the person responsible.

Taking serious note of the incident, Munde wrote to the Thane District Superintendent of Police on August 11, calling it a case of severe animal cruelty. She directed the police to conduct an immediate investigation, identify the accused and initiate legal proceedings.

The minister’s letter sought action under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 11(1)(a) and 11(1)(l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which deal with causing unnecessary pain, assault and inhuman treatment of animals.

“Just like human beings, the lives of animals are equally valuable. Such cruelty is unforgivable,” Munde said, while instructing authorities to submit a status report on the action taken.

Her intervention has strengthened the demand for strict punishment among animal welfare activists, who are urging the police to use CCTV evidence to identify and prosecute the accused. The case has drawn attention to the need for stronger action against animal cruelty in the city.
