Darwin (Australia): Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc created history on August 13 by becoming the most successful left-arm bowler in Test cricket during the opening Test against Bangladesh in Darwin.

Starc achieved the milestone after dismissing Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam in the ninth over of the first innings. The wicket took his Test tally to 434, helping him surpass Sri Lanka legend Rangana Herath’s record of 433 wickets and move to the top of the all-time left-arm bowling charts.

The 36-year-old pacer also equalled India great Kapil Dev’s Test wicket tally of 434. However, Starc reached the mark in 106 Tests, 25 matches fewer than Kapil, who achieved the feat in 131 Tests between 1978 and 1994.

Starc is now six wickets away from entering the top 10 highest wicket-takers in Test cricket. Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn currently holds the 10th position with 439 wickets in 93 Tests.

The milestone came on a challenging opening day for Australia, as Bangladesh’s pace attack dominated proceedings. Hasan Mahmud produced a career-best performance, claiming 6-55 as Australia were bowled out for 198.

After Australia made a strong start at 45 without loss, Hasan dismissed Jake Weatherald and Travis Head in quick succession to shift momentum. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also contributed with two wickets each.

Steve Smith top-scored for Australia with a fighting 71, but Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling effort ensured they controlled much of the opening day.
