City crime branch cracks 23 cases

Belapur: The Navi Mumbai crime branch has cracked 23 cases and arrested five accused in a major crackdown on crime across the city. The operation, carried out under the guidance of Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, resulted in the seizure of gold jewellery, cash, vehicles, weapons and narcotics worth Rs 18.42 lakh.
Crime Branch Unit-1 solved nine chain-snatching cases reported in Sanpada, Koparkhairane and Vashi. A delivery executive was arrested, with police alleging that he turned to chain snatching after losing money in online gambling. Two persons, including a jeweller accused of purchasing stolen property, were arrested. Police recovered gold ornaments worth around Rs 7.92 lakh and a scooter.
In another operation, police arrested Nitin Bavikar from Andhra Pradesh in connection with burglary cases, while Abrar Sheikh was arrested from Nagpada. Three cases were reportedly solved through these arrests.
Meanwhile, Crime Branch Unit-3 tracked a stolen mobile phone and arrested a suspected member of a robbery and chain-snatching gang from Indapur within four hours. Police seized a mobile phone, knife and iron weapons, and claimed to have solved six cases.
Unit-2 arrested Gurpreet Singh in CBD Belapur with 41.05 grams of heroin, according to police. Police have appealed to citizens to remain alert while wearing jewellery, report suspicious persons by calling 112, and ensure that children stay away from online gambling. Officials said the investigation into the cases and possible involvement of other persons is continuing.
