Navi Mumbai: The proposed Flamingo Blue Carbon Urban Complex is set to be one of the key highlights of Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) 2027, scheduled for February, with organisers aiming to showcase the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as a global example of combining biodiversity conservation with climate action.

Shishir Joshi, Founder and Chief Executive of Project Mumbai and convenor of MCW, said, “The upcoming edition will bring together environmental organisations, experts, policymakers, and community groups to strengthen collaborative efforts for protecting the region's fragile ecosystems and advancing climate solutions."

The initiative has received support from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), whose Director Kishor Rithe said the organisation will conduct workshops to help develop a practical climate action framework.

The Flamingo Blue Carbon Urban Complex, proposed by NatConnect Foundation Director B. N. Kumar, seeks to integrate wetlands, mangroves, mudflats, and flamingo habitats under a unified conservation strategy. The proposal, submitted to the Prime Minister's Office, has been forwarded to the Maharashtra State Wetland Authority for review.

The project highlights the economic and ecological value of wetlands, promoting blue carbon, climate finance, ecosystem services, and sustainable tourism while enhancing flood protection, shoreline stability, and climate resilience.

Participants at the preparatory workshop also stressed the need for the long-pending notification of Maharashtra's wetlands under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, despite the completion of ground verification of over 23,000 wetlands mapped by ISRO.

Environmental experts, including Nandakumar Pawar of Sagar Shakti, Roshni N of YUVA, and former NEERI Director Dr Rakesh Kumar, called for coordinated conservation efforts, practical climate solutions, and stronger institutional collaboration.

As part of preparations for MCW 2027, Project Mumbai recently brought together around 25 representatives from environmental organisations across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Pune, and Bengaluru to develop citizen-led climate initiatives and position India's climate solutions on the global stage.
