Kalyan: The Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav organised by Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal at the Vitthal Rukhmini Temple premises in Ramdaswadi, Kalyan West, is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in its 37th year. This year, the main attraction of the festival is a replica of the famous Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple in Karnataka.

The mandal has created an eco-friendly tableau showcasing the ancient architectural style and religious significance of the Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva’s Atmalinga, the temple is one of the prominent pilgrimage sites and is also known as the ‘Kashi of the South’.

Through the elaborate setup, the mandal has presented the mythological story associated with the Gokarna pilgrimage site. According to legend, while Ravana was carrying the Atmalinga, which he had received from Lord Shiva, to Lanka, Lord Ganesha tricked him into placing it on the ground at Gokarna. The Atmalinga could not be moved thereafter, making the place an important religious centre.

It is also believed that the region derived its name ‘Gokarna’ due to its resemblance to a cow’s ear. Various sites associated with the legend are collectively regarded as the Panch Mahabaleshwar pilgrimage centres.

The tableau, featuring religious information, mythological references and attractive decorations, has been drawing devotees in large numbers. Through this initiative in its 37th year, Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal has made an effort to preserve cultural heritage and introduce the younger generation to India’s rich religious traditions.
