Karan Johar locks 2028 release for R.N. Kao biopic

Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has officially locked August 11, 2028, as the theatrical release date for its untitled espionage drama on R&AW founder Rameshwar Nath Kao. Announced on September 21, 58 years after the inception of R&AW in 1968, the film is being co-produced with Leo Media Collective and is based on Nitin Gokhale’s book Gentleman Spymaster. The narrative will trace Kao’s journey from 1955 to 1971, covering the formation of India’s external intelligence agency and its first major test during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. While the director and lead cast remain undisclosed, an A-list actor is expected to headline the project. Production is scheduled to begin by mid-2026. The 2028 release date coincides with R&AW’s 60th anniversary and falls during the Independence Day weekend.
