Navi Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) protest over the pending Rs 7,500 monthly allowance for service-based contract workers has resulted in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) assuring that a proposal will be tabled before the upcoming Standing Committee meeting.

The NMMC General Body had passed Resolution No. 652 on June 19, 2026, approving a monthly ‘Civil Service Operation Special Allowance’ of Rs 7,500 for eligible contract workers. However, the decision had not been implemented, prompting the MNS to intensify its agitation.

On Thursday, October 8, workers led by MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande, city president Gajanan Kale and labour leaders Appasaheb Kothule and Rajesh Ujjainkar staged a ‘Topi Morcha’ protest, opposing the delay.

A delegation subsequently met NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, who gave a written assurance that the proposal for the allowance would be placed before the upcoming Standing Committee meeting. Following the assurance, the agitation was temporarily called off.

The MNS had earlier warned the civic administration through a press conference on August 9 and submitted a written representation on September 24, giving it 15 days to act.

The delegation also raised pending issues concerning the classification and salary differences of electricity department employees. The commissioner assured that these issues would be addressed within a month.

Deshpande warned that the MNS would intensify its agitation if the civic administration failed to honour its commitments.
