New Delhi: Veteran shuttler H S Prannoy and doubles star Chirag Shetty will spearhead India’s badminton challenge at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with both players aiming for a stronger finish after the team’s silver medal at the previous edition.

Prannoy, part of India’s 20-member badminton squad, said the Nagoya Games could be his final Asian Games appearance. However, the former world No. 6 has kept open the possibility of extending his career if he believes he can compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“This is probably my last Asian Games. I only want to play at this level, not lower,” Prannoy said. He added that he remains physically and mentally prepared after a positive outing at the Vietnam Open.

The 33-year-old, who won bronze at the previous Asian Games and was part of India’s silver-medal-winning team in Hangzhou, said the narrow defeat in the final would motivate the squad to chase gold in Nagoya.

Chirag Shetty, who partners Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, echoed the ambition, urging the team to give its all for the top prize. India had come close to gold in Hangzhou after taking a 2-0 lead against China before losing 2-3.

Chirag said the team’s experience from recent successes, including the Thomas Cup triumph and strong performances in international events, would boost confidence. The duo enters the Games after winning the China Open earlier this month.

Both players highlighted the importance of multi-sport events, saying representing India and wearing the national colours remains a special honour.
