Digha: A sofa manufacturing unit in Digha was completely gutted after a massive fire broke out at Wood World Furniture near Mukund Company in Eshwar Nagar on Sunday evening (September 20). The incident caused extensive damage to furniture, wooden material and foam stock, with losses estimated to run into lakhs of rupees.

The fire erupted around 6:45 p.m. when eight workers were present inside the factory. As smoke began spreading across the premises, the workers immediately switched off the electricity supply and evacuated safely, preventing a major tragedy.

The large quantity of wood, foam and other combustible materials stored at the unit caused the flames to spread rapidly. Following information about the blaze, fire teams from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and MIDC Fire Brigade rushed to the spot.

Eight fire tenders were deployed to control the intense flames. After nearly two hours of firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control, followed by a cooling operation to prevent the fire from reigniting.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though a possible electrical short circuit is suspected. Airoli Fire Station officer Upendra Bhoir provided details about the incident. No casualties were reported.
