20 Arrested After Clash Over Mosque

UJJAIN: Security remained tight in Ujjain on Wednesday following a clash over the removal of a portion of the Shahi Masjid at Chhatri Chowk. Police have registered an FIR against 30 people and arrested 20 suspects in connection with the incident. The situation remained peaceful as authorities prepared to remove the mosque’s minaret for a road-widening project linked to Simhastha 2028 preparations.
The affected area has remained under heavy security, with barricades and movement restrictions in several parts of the city. More than 250 shops and houses have remained closed for nearly two days, with traders claiming losses of around ₹10 crore. The dispute began on Monday when people opposed the removal of part of the mosque, following which stone-pelting was reported. Police are also investigating alleged provocative messages circulated on social media.
