BMC keeps 10% water cut in place for Mumbai

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will continue its 10 per cent water cut, saying the measure is necessary for now to ensure adequate supplies until the next monsoon while improving distribution across the city.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, who heads the BMC’s Hydraulics Department, told the Standing Committee in October that the cut could not be withdrawn despite complaints from corporators about low pressure and inadequate supply in several wards.

Officials acknowledged that elevated areas and neighbourhoods farther from main pipelines were facing a disproportionate impact. The civic body is considering day-wise rationing in smaller sub-areas to distribute the reduced 90 per cent supply more evenly and prevent prolonged shortages in particular neighbourhood pockets.

Between January and August 2026, the BMC received 17,906 complaints about water leakages and said all were rectified. It also recorded 4,084 complaints about unauthorised connections, of which 3,802 were disconnected and 282 regularised. Another 1,514 complaints concerned contaminated water and were resolved.

The civic body is also focusing on reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), currently estimated at about 34 per cent of total supply because of leakages, theft and other inefficiencies.

Bangar said reducing NRW to 24 per cent over the next few years could effectively add a volume of water comparable to the supply from a new dam such as Gargai, officials said.

Until then, the BMC said water conservation, leakage control and improved distribution would remain key to maintaining Mumbai’s water security through the dry months, officials said.
