Mumbai: Cinema tickets, concerts and other entertainment programmes in Mumbai may become costlier if the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s proposed entertainment tax revision receives approval from the state government.

The civic body has proposed a steep increase in entertainment tax rates, including a rise in the tax on air-conditioned multiplexes from the existing Rs 60 per show to Rs 400 per show. The proposed rates include ₹200 per show for single-screen AC cinemas and Rs 90 for non-AC theatres. Drama and other entertainment programmes may attract a tax of Rs 100 per show.

However, the proposal is yet to receive approval from the Urban Development Department and will come into effect only after being notified in the Official Gazette. Until then, existing tax rates will continue.

According to civic officials, exemptions currently provided for Marathi and Gujarati films, plays, one-act plays and tamashas are proposed to remain unchanged. The proposal also includes a six per cent concession for taxpayers who pay theatre tax on a monthly advance basis.

Before implementation, the proposal will have to clear various stages, including scrutiny by the Law Committee, Standing Committee and the general body of the municipal corporation.

The proposed hike has raised concerns among cinema exhibitors and entertainment industry stakeholders, who fear that higher taxes could increase ticket prices and affect audience turnout. The final decision will depend on the state government’s approval and subsequent notification.
