Kalyan: Runners from the Runners Clan Foundation (RCF) have brought pride to Kalyan-Dombivli by achieving a remarkable feat at the prestigious Khardung La Challenge in Ladakh, one of the world’s highest and most challenging marathon events.

Held in sub-zero temperatures, low oxygen levels and difficult terrain, the 72-km Khardung La Challenge saw RCF runner Vijay Sakpal (58) become the first participant from Kalyan-Dombivli to complete the gruelling race. He finished the ultra-marathon at an altitude of 17,615 feet in 12 hours, 36 minutes and 28 seconds.

Two other RCF runners completed the full marathon category of 42.195 km. Digender Mahara (35) completed the race, held at an altitude of 11,155 feet, in 4 hours and 27 minutes. Gopinath Nair (65) completed the challenging course in 6 hours and 32 minutes, proving that age is no barrier to fitness and endurance.

Adding a cultural touch to the event, Vaishali Sakpal completed the 5-km run while wearing a traditional Maharashtrian nine-yard saree. Her participation and effort to showcase Marathi culture on the Ladakh platform won appreciation from spectators and organisers, who invited her on stage for a special felicitation.

“Proper training, determination and consistency can help overcome challenges, irrespective of age,” the runners said, sharing their inspiring message.

The achievement has been widely appreciated by sports enthusiasts and residents of Kalyan-Dombivli, marking a significant milestone for the city’s running community.
