Mumbai: Kalachowki Police have arrested two men from Indore in connection with theft complaints during Ganeshotsav in Lalbaug on September 14.

The accused, identified as Arif Saksenasinh Gujjar, 24, and Somnath Samansinh Rathod, 23, were arrested after devotees allegedly caught them while they were fleeing after the theft of a security guard’s mobile phone and Rs 2,300 in cash.

Several devotees reported losing jewellery in crowded queues for Ganesh darshan. A 67-year-old woman allegedly lost a 10-gram gold necklace valued at about Rs 70,000, while another devotee reported a 13-gram gold chain theft worth approximately Rs 90,000.

In a separate complaint, a 60-year-old Matunga resident reported that a 25-gram gold chain, valued at around Rs 2 lakh, was stolen while he was visiting Mumbai Cha Raja at Ganesh Galli.

Police are investigating whether the arrested men are connected to other theft complaints reported in Lalbaug. Officers are also examining whether additional members may be involved in a larger pickpocketing group.

The arrests followed heavy footfall at Ganeshotsav venues. Crowds around Lalbaugcha Raja, Ganesh Galli and other popular mandals create opportunities for thieves to target devotees carrying jewellery, phones, cash and wallets.

Police have appealed to visitors to remain alert, avoid displaying valuables and keep mobile phones, wallets and jewellery secure. Devotees have also been advised to report thefts promptly so officers can examine CCTV footage and identify suspects.

The accused remain suspects, and jewellery losses are based on complaints. Their alleged involvement will have to be established through the investigation and court proceedings.
