Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of seven food establishments in Mumbai following inspections that revealed serious hygiene and food safety violations. The action comes as part of a festive-season crackdown to ensure compliance with food safety standards.

Among the establishments facing suspension is the iconic 108-year-old Olympia Coffee House in Colaba. FDA officials reported finding several irregularities, including a urinal inside a food storage area, unhygienic food preparation facilities, use of unclean water, and the presence of cockroaches and flies. Meat and blood residues were also reportedly found inside a refrigerator, along with improper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.

Licences of other establishments, including Milan Punjab in Worli, a Blink Commerce facility in Chembur, Vishwas Sweets and Snacks and A-1 General & Dry Fruits in Ghatkopar West, and Sadguru Sweets in Malad East, were also suspended following inspections.

The FDA has directed the establishments to stop food-related activities until the reported deficiencies are rectified and fresh inspections are conducted. The department said the action was taken to protect public health and ensure compliance with prescribed hygiene norms.

Meanwhile, Nair Hospital Dean Dr Shailesh Mohite disputed certain aspects of the inspection related to the hospital canteen, stating that the facility was a private nursing mess and questioning the inspection procedure. However, the FDA maintained that the action was necessary in the interest of public health.

The crackdown is part of a wider state-level food safety drive led by the FDA.
