Thane: For 48 years, the Narveer Tanaji Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Panchpakhadi has sought to make Ganeshotsav a platform for fraternity, social awareness and community service.

Established in 1979 by youngsters, the mandal aimed to channel youth energy into constructive activities. Organisers recall that Panchpakhadi was considered a backward area, with frequent clashes and anti-social elements. They sought to change this perception through community participation and celebrations.

Named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s warrior Tanaji Malusare, the mandal emphasises collective strength and social responsibility.

Dr Jitendra Awhad joined the mandal as a worker and later became its chief adviser and guide. He remains associated with planning themes and presentations, while organisers recall his participation in preparing decorations alongside volunteers.

The mandal’s installations have highlighted Maharashtra’s heritage, the freedom movement, youth empowerment, national integration and Hindu-Muslim unity. It has also recreated temples and heritage sites from across India.

Its initiatives extend beyond the annual festival. The mandal has organised health camps, blood donation drives and assistance for economically weaker sections, besides participating in relief efforts during disasters and the pandemic. Volunteers also help manage arrangements and assist devotees during the festival.

Cultural programmes have included qawwali performances aimed at bringing communities together.

In 2025, the mandal presented replicas of 11 revered Maruti temples from Maharashtra, continuing its tradition of combining devotion with social messaging.

Today, Awhad continues as chief adviser and guide, while younger office-bearers and volunteers carry forward the organisation’s legacy of social unity, public service and constructive youth participation.
